The Tristan Volcanic Islands bioregion, located on the western edge of the Afrotropical realm, is a remote group of small islands in the far south of the Atlantic Ocean. The islands contain predominantly temperate grasslands with one single ecoregion—Tristan Da Cunha-Gough Islands Shrub and Grasslands [68]—but has numerous endemic plant species including the tree fern. Whales and dolphins are often sighted in the waters surrounding the islands, and the area is of particular importance for bird species. The total land area of the island is approximately 17,000 hectares.
The Tristan Volcanic Islands bioregion is part of the Southern Afrotropics subrealm and is made up of one ecoregion: Tristan Da Cunha-Gough Islands Shrub and Grasslands [1].
