Indian Tropical Coastal Forests bioregion

The bioregion’s land area is provided in units of 1,000 hectares. The conservation target is the combined Global Safety Net (GSN1) areas for the component ecoregions. The protection level indicates the percentage of the GSN goal that is currently protected on a scale of 0-10. N/A means data is not available at this time.

The Indian Tropical Coastal Forests bioregion is located along the western coast of the Indian Subcontinent subrealm in Indomalaya. It contains seven ecoregions – Sri Lanka Lowland Rain Forests [1], Sri Lanka Montane Rain Forests [2], Malabar Coast Moist Forests [3], South Western Ghats Montane Rain Forests [4], South Western Ghats Moist Deciduous Forests [5], North Western Ghats Montane Rain Forests [6], North Western Ghats Moist Deciduous Forests [7] – totaling approximately 17 million hectares of land area and adjacent marine areas. Defined by the long Western Ghats mountain range and adjoining coastline, this bioregion was once dominated by rainforests that thrived in the annual monsoon cycle, which can bring as much as 8 feet of rainfall to the region. While nearly all of the natural forests have been cleared, some pockets remain as sacred groves preserved by local communities.

The Indian Tropical Coastal Forests bioregion is part of the Indian Subcontinent subrealm and is made up of seven ecoregions: Sri Lanka Lowland Rain Forests [1], Sri Lanka Montane Rain Forests [2], Malabar Coast Moist Forests [3], South Western Ghats Montane Rain Forests [4], South Western Ghats Moist Deciduous Forests [5], North Western Ghats Montane Rain Forests [6], North Western Ghats Moist Deciduous Forests [7].
